Drinking glass Animals are a British indie rock band formed in Oxford in 2010. Led by singer, songwriter, and producer Dave Bayley, the group too features his babyhood friends Joe Seaward, Ed Irwin-Singer and Drew MacFarlane. Bayley wrote and produced all 3 Glass Animals albums. Bayley spent his childhood in Massachusetts and Texas [3] earlier relocating to Oxford, where he met the other band members at St Edward's School, Oxford, a private boarding schoolhouse. [4] Their first album, Zaba (2014), spawned the single "Gooey", which was eventually certified platinum in the United States. Their 2nd full album, How to Be a Man Existence , received generally positive reviews and won in two categories at the 2022 MPG Awards for UK Album of the Year and Self Producing Creative person of the Year, as well equally a spot on the Mercury Prize shortlist. The third, Dreamland , their showtime fully autobiographical album (Bayley had said he felt information technology was selfish to write most oneself), peaked at number ii on the UK Albums Chart and number seven on the U.s.a. Billboard 200.
In their live shows they play re-worked, dance-heavy versions of their songs. Their song "Heat Waves" reached number one in Commonwealth of australia in February 2022 and was voted number one on the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2022. The song surpassed one billion streams on Spotify [5] and eventually reached number one in the US Billboard Hot 100 and number five on the UK Singles Chart. At the 2022 Brit Awards, Glass Animals were nominated for ii Brit Awards (All-time British Rock Human activity and "Heat Waves" for All-time British Single). [six] They received their first Grammy nomination in the Best New Artist category at the 2022 Grammy Awards.
History [ edit ]
2012–2015: Zaba and various EPs [ edit ]
The band released their debut EP, Leaflings, on 28 May 2012, which included the single "Cocoa Hooves". The EP was released on independent characterization Kaya Kaya Records, a subsidiary and imprint of Xl Recordings (role of the Beggars Group of labels). At the time, lead singer and guitarist Dave Bayley was attention medical schoolhouse at King's Higher, London simply left afterwards Adele'southward producer Paul Epworth saw Glass Animals performing in London and signed them to his characterization Wolf Tone.
In 2013, the ring released Black Mambo / Exxus EP in Europe, and Drinking glass Animals EP in the US. The digital release of the track "Black Mambo" brought the band their first attention through online reviews. [vii] The Glass Animals EP as well saw the ring collaborating with Jean Deaux, a soulful hip-hop teenager from Chicago, on a song titled "Woozy".
In 2014, the ring fabricated their first visit to the US, performing at South past Southwest in Austin, Texas. They released three more singles: "Pools", "Gooey", and "Hazey", along with a collaboration with Argentine vocalist-songwriter and producer Tei Shi.[ citation needed ]
All five singles were included on the band's debut album, Zaba , which was released on 6 June 2014. The ring performed the unmarried "Gooey" on Late Night with Seth Meyers [eight] in 2014, and again on The Late Testify with David Letterman [9] on 24 February 2015, and toured extensively after Zaba, visiting both hemispheres and played over 130 shows in 2015 lone. Their October 2015 U.s.a. bout included two sold-out shows at The Wiltern in LA and sold-out shows across America including T5 in NYC, The Riverside in Milwaukee, and the Midland Theatre in Kansas City.
A collaboration with American rapper Joey Bada$$, titled "Lose Control", was released on 6 October 2015.
2016–2022: How to Be a Human being Being and tour [ edit ]
On 16 May 2016, the band released the pb single, "Life Itself", from their 2d anthology How to Be a Man Being . [x] "Life Itself" peaked at number xiv on Billboard 's Culling Songs chart and spent 26 weeks on Sirius XM's Alt-eighteen nautical chart, peaking at number one. [11] A music video for the song was released on 7 June 2016. The band too created a website based on the graphic symbol from "Life Itself".
On 25 July, a second unmarried from the album, "Youth", was released along with its music video. [11] This song was also used as a soundtrack in the popular football game video game past EA Sports, FIFA 17 . Iv days before the release of the anthology, on 22 Baronial, the band released a third unmarried, "Season 2 Episode 3", nigh a girl who "spends her entire fourth dimension watching TV, lounging effectually, non doing annihilation, being loftier, eating mayonnaise from a jar". The full anthology How to Exist a Human being Being was released on 26 August 2016 by Wolf Tone and Caroline International in Europe, and Harvest Records in the U.s.. Information technology was inspired by stories of strangers that Bayley met on tour, [3] with each song telling a different story from a different perspective.The anthology received critical acclaim for its "sense of wonder" and "immediate impression", though it was also met with some mixed reactions, for critics felt that it was somewhat premature. They played Laneway Festivals in six different cities (Singapore, Sydney, and Auckland, among others). During their time in Commonwealth of australia, their 3 singles from How to Exist a Human being—"Youth", "Life Itself", and "Season 2 Episode iii", respectively—came in at 38, 63 and 98 on Triple J'south Hottest 100.[ commendation needed ]
In July 2022, drummer Joe Seaward was seriously injured when he was hit by a lorry while cycling in Dublin. Seaward's blow and recovery resulted in the ring cancelling their remaining tour dates for residue of the twelvemonth. [13]
2022–present: Dreamland [ edit ]
After touring for How to Be a Human Existence, the ring released two singles; "Tokyo Globe-trotting", a duet with Denzel Curry, on 14 November 2022, [2] and "Your Love (Déjà Vu)" on xix February 2022. [xiv] On i May 2022, the band released a single named "Dreamland", and announced an album of the aforementioned proper noun to be released on 10 July 2022. [15] The beginnings of Dreamland originated later on drummer Joe Seaward'south bike accident in Dublin. While spending long hours by Seaward's side in the hospital as he recovered, Bayley started "writing downwardly memories and searching for more than memories." Those memories eventually evolved into the cornball and very personal Dreamland album full of references to Bayley's babyhood and other points in his life. [5]
On 28 June, the band announced that the album had been delayed, in society to "continue focus on the Black Lives Matter movement and the discussions taking place around racism and police brutality around the world." [16] In the atomic number 82-up to Dreamland, Glass Animals launched an open up-source website where fans could access and download song samples, artwork, and other content related to the anthology. [5] Dreamland was released on 7 August 2022 via Polydor Records; in an interview with Atwood Mag, Dave Bayley explained, "I guess the goal with this record was to make something that was incredibly honest and incredibly us." [17] The album entered the U.k. Albums Chart at number 2. "Estrus Waves" was included on the FIFA 21 soundtrack. On 13 October 2022, the song was too used every bit part of the Apple Outcome during the declaration of the HomePod mini.[ citation needed ]
On 23 January 2022, "Heat Waves" placed first on the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2022 in Australia, with "Tangerine" placing at 18th and "Your Love (Déjà Vu)" at 51st. The post-obit month, "Oestrus Waves" reached number one on the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Singles Nautical chart. [xviii] In April 2022, "Tokyo Drifting" featured in a television commercial released by Peloton as function of their Champions Collection campaign. [19]
Bonus track and single "I Don't Wanna Talk (I Just Wanna Trip the light fantastic toe)" features on the official FIFA 22 soundtrack.[ citation needed ] Afterward a record-breaking 59-week climb on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, "Estrus Waves" reached number 1 for the week catastrophe March 12, 2022.
